Core Information

Fon Thuay Lai Dap (Worshipping Spirits and Ancestors)

Creator:Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Khon Kaen University

"Fon Thuay Lai Dap" is a creative performance rooted in the traditional Isan belief that a sword (Dap) is a sacred object capable of warding off danger. The choreography is intricately designed based on sword dances from three significant rituals found in Sakon Nakhon province: the Mo Yao healing ritual, the fire-playing ritual of the Thai So people, and the Kaleung spirit dance. The core concept of the performance revolves around worshipping spirits and honoring ancestors. This is visually conveyed through the performers' attire, which features ancient warrior costumes complete with the traditional battle helmets of ancient Lan Xang soldiers.
